Meet The Board

Kurtis McAleer, Interim Chair

Kurtis McAleer is the founder and incoming Executive Director of the Durham Youth Council. Kurtis has been building Youth Council's since 2009 when he founded the Ajax Youth Council. In 2010, he help found the Pickering Youth Council. In 2011, Kurtis was the driver behind a region-wide Youth Council, and the Durham Youth Council was born.

Maia Knight

Maia is currently pursuing a degree in Political Science and Law at Carleton University. Maia has always had a love for politics, and in the 2019 Federal Election she ran as a candidate in Ajax, as one of the youngest candidates in the country, at 18 years old. During the most recent Federal Election, Maia worked as the Manager of Campaign Operations and Strategy for a campaign in Toronto. Maia is currently an intern in GreenPAC’s parliamentary internship for the environment, working in the office of MP Dan Albas.

Krystal Doggrell

Krystal Doggrell served as Ajax's first and only female Youth Mayor from 2011-2012. She later served as a Durham Youth Councillor for Ajax from 2012-2015 and as Vice-Chair of the DYC from 2011-2012. Krystal was born and raised in Ajax an now works in the social services sector working directly with children and youth.

Zak Rhemtulla

Zak Rhemtulla is a former Durham & Pickering Youth Councillor. 

Sai Tuppal

Sai currently works as a study coordinator in the pharmaceutical industry. Sai has experience with youth empowerment and community outreach which spans for years as he has served on many organizations. He is currently the Board Secretary of the Carion Fenn Foundation where he works on the planning for various community outreach initiatives dealing with mental health, health in general, accessibility and anti-racism. Sai is a proud Rotarian as a member of the Rotary Club of Whitby. There, he sits on various committees to help with the club’s mandate. Sai is a former Durham Youth Councillor.
